The groundbreaking work on relay technology of what is today Panasonic Electric Works in Europe started more than 35 years ago when new generations of electromechanical relays were developed. Since 1986, PhotoMOS semiconductor relays have also been part of this development. For many years, it was widely believed that PhotoMOS relays were in competition with electromechanical relays, but they turned out to complement the product range perfectly. In the meantime, over 500,000,000 PhotoMOS relays have been sold worldwide!

Besides the obvious advantages PhotoMOS relays offer (miniature size, switching time, lifetime and reliability), one of the main reaons for this success is Panasonic Electric Works' broad product range. Besides the general usage types, current limiting and even short-circuit protected types have been introduced. Moreover, the load current capacity of the PhotoMOS relays has been increased and their ON-resistance and output capacitance reduced.

PhotoMOS relays with low ON-resistance and output capacitance (low CxR) are particulary well suited for measurement applications. Due to their reduced output capacitance and lower ON-resistance, these PhotoMOS types offer extra high switching speeds, high open output isolation and minimised insertion loss for AC and DC signals.

The new AQW223R2S is exemplary: the PhotoMOS relay pushes the load voltage for low CxR types up to 250V, combined with an ON-resistance of 11# and an output capacitance of only 11pF, helping Panasonic Electric Works stake out its position as global market leader once again.
