The software of a Machine Vision device makes a significant contribution to the efficiency of the whole inspection system. The more powerful, versatile and intuitive the software is, the easier and faster it is for a user to implement a perfect inspection routine. Panasonic has made a great effort to create a universally applicable and reliable tool.
The PV500 software offers inspection algorithms for the major applications of industrial quality inspection and process automation. The most powerful are:
- Surface and flaw inspection
- Smart matching
- Connector inspection
- Auto area adjustment
- Effective evaluation
- Setup support tools

Inspection algorithms for almost any inspection task
The PV500 was designed as a multi-purpose inspection tool. It offers inspection algorithms for a wide range of industrial Machine Vision tasks. Typical fields of application are position detection of goods, product differentiation, presence checking, sorting, pick & place, imprint inspection, surface inspection and others. The setup of the inspection algorithms (called "checkers") is done with the help of a menu-based software which requires no programming skills and allows fast modifications even if is utilized only occasionally. Several help functions and automatic adjustment proposals guide the user on his way to achieve an optimum result.

Surface and flaw inspection
Surface defects and edge chippings are among the most difficult inspection tasks for Machine Vision. Panasonic has developed special algorithms for this sort of application. The ingenious algorithms detect cracks, sinkholes, scratches, webs and other tiny flaws reliably. Even if there are variations in the object's contrast or size, surface flaws will still be recognized. We are especially proud of the easy setup of this checker, which allows even inexperienced users to achieve a professional result in no time at all.

Smart matching
Checking the quality of imprints plays a significant role in the packaging and pharmaceutical industry. Very often also customers from the automotive industry need to detect even the slightest deviations from the ideal imprint, e.g. on dashboard elements. The PV500 solves such applications with a very comfortable and powerful algorithm called smart matching. It compares reference templates stored in the PV500 with the current camera image and detects differences with a resolution of one pixel reliably. The internal memory allows to store and to administer up to 2,000 reference templates.

Connector inspection
The PV500 offers six methods for the inspection of contact pins - for example of connectors. With only one checker, you can measure features such as the pitch, the co-planarity and the inside pin gap quickly and precisely. Of course, these algorithms cannot only be applied for connectors but also for ICs or stamping parts. Since this checker only needs the definition of a start and an end point and a few other basic adjustments, it is very easy to set up.

Auto area adjustment
If an object cannot be positioned precisely in the camera's field of view, the position- adjustment function of the PV500 compensates such variations in object position. If, however, not only the object's position varies, but also its size, the auto area adjustment will be the right tool to correct the position of the checkers accordingly. With this function it is for example possible to precisely inspect the outline of an object even if the dimensions change with each object.

Effective evaluation
The PV500 offers comprehensive evaluation possibilities. The results of individual checkers can be combined and computed in the numerical calculation menu using arithmetic, trigonometric and geometric functions (e.g. circle defined by three points, etc.). Also, you can perform a basic statistical analysis. With the help of logical combinations in the total judgement menu in many cases it is even possible to omit an additional PLC for evaluation. To complete the versatile possibilities of the PV500, we would like to bring to your attention the so-called checker list, which shows inspection results at a glance and allows you to create your own layout for the result display.

Setup support tools
To ensure a quick and easy installation of the system, the user is supported by several helpful support tools. For example, a bar graph indicates the optimum settings for focus and aperture. Other diagrams show the gray-value histogram or the brightness distribution. The I/O monitor allows you to check that wiring to external devices is correct and to emulate the connection to a PLC.
