Safer sport for the Royal Marines

27 Mar 2006

Access to low bay luminaires for maintenance at a Royal Marines Sports Hall will be safer, quicker and less disruptive thanks to the use of luxlift units from Panasonic Electric Works.

The Luxlift allows light fittings weighing up to 20kg to be securely fastened to its electric lift mechanism and then automatically lowered and raised for heights of up to 20 metres. This eliminates the need for heavy scissor lifts, high ladders or scaffold - thus increasing safety, reducing maintenance costs and minimising disruption to users of the hall.

As with any high-ceiling application, one of the main considerations has to be the safety and ease of maintenance of the luminaires, as determined by the CDM (Construction, Design and Management) regulations. Luxlift overcomes many of the potential problems of access by avoiding the need for operatives to use access devices (such as ladders, scissor lifts or cherry pickers) to reach the luminaires. Instead, each fitting can be lowered and raised to ground level independently to provide maximum flexibility and ensure a fast response when a lamp fails or a fitting needs to be maintained.

Thirty-six of the Luxlift devices have been fitted by Rotrax Engineering Services to 400W metal halide fittings, providing the even light distribution and good colour rendering required in the sports hall. The luminaires are fitted with a glass cover and wire guard for added protection and plug and socket connections have been used for ease of maintenance.
